Unit 13 Mahabir Pun: A Visionary Social Entrepreneurship (p-118)
Reflection of the Text
Mahabir Pun, born in Nangi Village, Myagdi District, in the Himalayan foothills of western Nepal, is a renowned Nepali entrepreneur. He has made significant contributions to rural villages through health, education, and awareness programs. Pun has been working tirelessly to connect remote areas through wireless technologies, overcoming challenges and establishing a village.
He has also worked with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) to help connect his village and establish a wireless connection between Nangi and the neighboring village of Ramche. In 2001, the BBC publicized his dilemma, and within a year, volunteers from Europe and the United States helped him set up a wireless connection between Nangi and the neighboring village of Ramche. This led to the construction of improvised mountaintop relay stations and a link to Pokhara, and by 2003, Nangi was online. This was big news on the World Wide Web.
Pun expanded the wireless network to 12 villages and distributed ninety used computers to local schools and communication centers. The internet has enabled people from Myagdi to learn through Pun’s “teleteaching," with good teachers instructing students in others. Local health workers use Wi-Fi to consult specialists in Pokhara, students learn global skills through surfing the net, and villagers e-market local products. Pun has also helped villagers use solar power for their energy needs.
The people of Nangi have added a library, health clinic, and new high-school classrooms. Pun's lifelong vision for improving rural Nepal is to set up vocational training schools for rural people. He helps people start income-generating programs in rural areas and brings information and communication technology to remote villages for educational, medical, commercial, and communication purposes.
He established the National Innovation Centre in December 2012, aiming to retain talented, innovative, and creative young people in the country. Pun believes that investment in innovation and research drives the country toward economic prosperity. It also encourages Nepali foreigners to return with innovative ideas that strengthen the country's backbone.
He also appeals to the federal, state, and local governments to set aside a small percentage of their development budgets for establishing innovation centers to capture and utilize innovative human capital for Nepal's economic development.
