Wish (Subjunctive mood)  

The verb ‘wish’ or ‘if only’ is used to talk about the things that we want but are impossible.

a.      I wish I could buy a laptop.

b.     If only I could go abroad.

Sub + wish + simple past – This structure shows a wish for the present

E.g.: I scored a few marks in exams. I wish I knew the answers.

Sub + wish + would / could- This structure shows a wish for the future.

E.g.: I can’t speak Korean. I wish I could speak Korean.

Sub + wish + Past Perfect – This structure is used to show a wish for the past. E.g.: She bought a cheap watch. She wishes she had bought an expensive watch.

c.      I wish he would lend me some money.

d.     I wish I lived closer to my family.

e.      I wish they wouldn't park their car in front of my house.

f.       He wishes he could afford a holiday.

g.       You feel lonely.
