Writing I: Interpretation of Pie Chart
B. The pie charts below show the information about household expenditure in Nepal in 2004 and 2011. Write an interpretation of the charts making comparisons where necessary.
The pie charts compare household expenditure in Nepal for the years 2004 and 2011 across four main categories: food, housing, education, and other non-food items. In 2004, the largest portion of household spending was on food, which accounted for 59% of the total expenditure. By 2011, this had increased slightly to 61.5%.
Housing expenses in 2004 were 9.5% of the total expenditure. This category saw growth, rising to 11% in 2011. Education spending also increased significantly. In 2004, it was just 2.8%, but by 2011, it had nearly doubled to 5.3%. On the other hand, expenditure on other non-food items decreased. In 2004, 28.7% of the household budget was allocated to this category, but by 2011, it had dropped to 22.2%.
In summary, from 2004 to 2011, there was an increase in the proportion of household expenditure on food, housing, and education, while the share spent on other non-food items decreased.
