Class 12 English Unit 2: Family:Critical Thinking Langauge Development Section
A. What changes have started to occur in Nepali families in recent days? What impacts will they bring to society? Discuss.
Since the world is now the 21st century, everything is gradually developing from traditional technology to modern technology. Nowadays, people want to satisfy their feeling. They change their behavior to a family lifestyle with modern technology. They want to live in a nuclear family full of happiness with a child, husband, and wife but there is a rapid increase in divorce in Nepal on the other side due to misunderstandings in a nuclear family. In Nepali families, both males and females can rule the household and country. Every male or female is getting equal rights in the family. Every family member is supposed to understand each other feelings, happy and they can share their idea and concepts in the family. In Nepalese families, marriage at a young age is increasing day by day. Youths have also started to adopt living together but giving birth to a baby is not accepted in society. However, different kinds of ceremonies such as baby showers, and anniversaries have been started to celebrate in the name of a happy family. Both arranged and love marriages are practiced in society simultaneously. In some families, a husband is suffering from his wife whereas a wife has become a victim due to going abroad society. Thus, we also find misunderstandings between the spouses regarding their marriage life and the rearing and bearing of their children. Such issues have invited great challenges in society.
In my view, change in Nepalese families in recent days invites both negative and positive impacts on society.

B. We see many elderly people in elderly homes these days in Nepal. Some of them are abandoned while others live there willingly. Do you think Nepali people are deviating from their traditional culture? Give reasons.
The norms and values of society differ from one culture to another culture because we behave with other people based on our culture and tradition. Therefore, our behaviors reflect our society’s norms and values. The place of elderly people in eastern society certainly differs from western society. Moreover, elderly people are observed and considered differently in different families. We know that these are the people who educate us from every corner of life from dragging to nursery class to the upper level of education in life.
These people have not only shown us the correct path for our future life but also contributed their invaluable moments of life for the shake of our life. However, we see many elderly people in elderly homes these days in Nepal. Some of them are rightly abandoned by their family members whereas some of them live there as their wish. Those, who have been abandoned and are compelled to live in elderly homes, are certainly deserted in the family. They must have been kicked out from the family after snatching their property. Because the will of property and sophisticated life standards have closed our internal eyes to love, respect, compassion, affection, and humanity as well. Instead, we have our pride, greed, selfish concept, jealousy, contemplation, vanity, and snob.
Moreover, Nepali people are deviating from their traditional culture. The effect of western culture, soaring wants and desires, modern approach to life, generation gap, industrialization, and willpower of having a Green Card in abroad can be some reasons behind it. Additionally, Nepali people have started to celebrate western cultures instead of celebrating Nepali cultures in naming, and marriage ceremonies. These all indicate that Nepali people are floating away from Nepali culture.
