a.       Why family is important to you.

b.      Why family is or is not important for society.

c.       How do you think families will change in the future?

The Importance of Family

Family is our foundation. It is through family that we learn our first interactions with the world. It teaches us how to love and be loved, how to offer and receive support, and how to respect others while earning their respect. It provides the framework for our views of the world. The socially acceptable version of family is the people who are biologically related to you.

One of the main reasons the family is essential to me is that it provides support and security for each other. Another reason family is very important to me is that they are the ones who love and understand me.  Everyone has emotional needs. We are a species as reliant on our emotions as our intellect. For our well-being, both mental and physical, we need emotional connection. My family provides that to me in spades. My family gives me unconditional love. My family also gives me the feeling that I belong somewhere. As per Abram Maslow’s diagram called the Hierarchy of Needs, once the needs at the bottom of the pyramid such as food, water, and shelter have been fulfilled, we have emotional needs. We need to feel love and we need somewhere to belong. A family provides that foundation. A family is the first social environment that we interact with. It is through family that we learn the basics of social interactions and socialize ourselves, i.e. learn to interact with society. It is through family that we learn how to survive and thrive. Family is important for society because we follow some code of conduct of society which we learn from our society. The process of socialization is also important to adopt a social environment that we learn from our family. But, I think our family is going to be diversified in the future due to the effect of western culture, multilingualism, and the global environment.

Times have changed. Our attitudes towards marriage, relationships, and what constitutes a family have also changed. Relationships that were taboo once are now considered normal. Those resistant to these changes have predicted the breakdown of society and said that families are under attack. However, all that has happened is that our concept of what a family is has evolved along with the social changes of the last 100 years. Families are still the foundation of society and they always will be.

B.     Some people think it is better to live in a nuclear family. Other people think that living with an extended family is more advantageous. What do you think? Write an essay discussing the advantages and disadvantages of both.

Nuclear family and Extended Family

The nuclear family is composed of a husband, wife, and their children, otherwise, Extend family is composed of a grandfather, grandmother, parents, brother and their wives, daughter-in-law, grandson, etc., who share the same kitchen and shelter for up to four generations.

In my view, an extended family is better than a nuclear family. An extended family is a combination of all generations of a member. In these families, all members of the family including the children also grow with the belief that they also have certain duties and functions to perform. They should learn to control their demand and expectation. In Nepal, more people prefer to stay with extended family and I'm also one of them in comparison to the nuclear family. The advantages of an extended family are, in an extended family there is a good social and emotional relationship among the family members. There is proper economic and social security. In an extended family, there is proper care and supervision for the children also proper education and control over the problem of adolescence. The important advantage of the extended family is a sense of protection of culture, tradition, and values. There is not only an advantage of an Extended family but also some disadvantages occur in an extended family. In extended it can push back in personality development. There is less privacy. There may be a probability of low living standards. There may be difficult to meet the needs and demands of each member of the family. Less self-confidence and dependency may increase in the extended family

The advantages of a nuclear family are better understanding and cooperation among each other, less possibility of quarreling among family members due to the fewer members, easy to meet the needs and demands of each family and freedom of making decisions of their own. However, the disadvantages of a nuclear family are lack of security and confidence, conflict in the family, lack of proper care of children and old age people generation gap in respecting the norms and values of people, and lack of love and care for the children if the couple engaged in professions.
