Sentence functions

A.   Do you know the parts of a sentence? If not, look at this sentence.

The fat man painted the door green last week.

In this sentence, the fat man → Subject (S)

painted → Verb (V)

the door → Object (O)

green → Complement (C)

last week → Adverbial (A)

1.     Subject: It is a noun, noun phrase, or pronoun that represents a person or thing

Example: Jennie read the novel fast.

2.     Verb: It is a word or group of words that expresses an action, an event, or a state. Example: They laugh at him.

3.     Object: It is a noun, a noun phrase, or a pronoun that is affected by the action of a verb. Objects give our language detail and texture by allowing the creation of complex sentences. Example: She gave him a pen.

4.     Complement: It is a term used for a word or phrase, especially an adjective or a noun. It follows a linking verb and describes the subject of the verb.

Example: The boy is a worker.

5.     Adjunct: It is usually an adverb or a phrase that modifies a verb in a sentence or part of a sentence. Example: He drives a car slowly.

B.    Divide the following sentences into different parts.

Example: The man will buy a pen next week.

The man – will buy – a pen – next week.

      Subject + Verb + Object + Adverbial

a.      The children are playing now.

Sub. + verb + adverbial.

b.     Srijana will be reading a story.

Sub +  verb + obj.

c.      Bimala is a very beautiful girl.

d.     She usually wears glasses.

Sub + adverbial + verb + object

e.      They elected him President.

f.       Rabin is laughing.

Sub + verb (be).

g.     He has a big house in Butwal.

Sub + verb (have) + comp. + adverbial

h.     The man who lives next door is a professor.

Sub + comp. (Relative Clause)

i.       Her uncle has been living in Kathmandu for fifteen years.

Sub + verb + adverbial + adverbial

j.       The girl with long hair asked me a question last week.

Sub + comp. + verb + obj (Indirect) + Obj (direct) adverbial
