Writing (page 142)

Write an essay in about 500 words on the following topics.

a.      War and Peace

No doubt war is an evil, the greatest catastrophe that befalls human beings. It brings death and destruction, disease and starvation, poverty, and ruin in its wake. One has only to look back to the havoc that was wrought in various countries not many years ago to estimate the destructive effects of war. A troubling aspect of modern wars is that they often become global, potentially engulfing the entire world.

Modern war is highly destructive, yet countries still fight. World organizations, such as the UN, have made efforts to prevent countries from going to war, but with limited success. The question arises, how can a country live in peace when other countries can attack it at any time? We can live in peace only if we are strong. Naturally, other countries, not on good terms with us, will take advantage of our weakness. If we are weak, they will attack us to settle their disputes with us or to take away parts of our country. This has happened so many times. Germany attacked the weaker European countries during the First and Second World Wars, and Israel took away parts of Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria from the Arabs in 1967. Later, she attacked Lebanon several times only because the Lebanese were not well prepared for war. Another war between the Arabs and Israel in 1973 saw the return of many parts of the Arab lands from Israeli hands. Yet the disputes between the Arabs and Israel continued to sour their relations.

Moreover, the Big Powers, namely the United States of America, Russia, Britain, France, and China, as well as other powerful countries, are continually trying to outdo one another in terms of strength. They have produced weapons of mass (large-scale) destruction like the atom, hydrogen, cobalt, and neutron bombs, supersonic (traveling at speeds more than that of sound) warplanes, missiles, etc. They are producing still more dangerous weapons to make sure that no other country can start a war against them. This is also what the less powerful countries in Asia, Africa, and elsewhere are trying to do. They are arraying (grouping) themselves with deadly weapons for defensive purposes more than for offensive (that is, for attacks). Therefore, preparation for war is necessary for both defence and peace. Even the US is trying to have a modern defensive system against nuclear (atomic) attacks called the nuclear umbrella.

However, a country like ours, India, Burma, or Turkey cannot easily afford the heavy expenditure of war preparations. This money can be spent on the betterment of the common people. But these countries are afraid of being attacked from outside, so they continue arming themselves. War is as much a fact today as it was hundreds of years ago. The sadder fact is that the little peace that we find here and there is because most of the countries are armed to the teeth or armed with nuclear weapons like atomic and hydrogen bombs. An attack by one country on another means a destructive and dangerous war into which other countries may jump; thus, the war may get enlarged.

So, war is postponed for the weaker countries, which, of course, will take place someday. For the strongest countries, there is an agreed long or permanent war holiday.

b.     Responsive Youths for Peace and Prosperity

It should be accepted that creating a balanced and peaceful society is essential. Thus, for each country, youth is a crucial factor in fostering harmony. Youth contribute innovative ideas, and they are fresh and young blood who can accomplish the entire plan with their passion and hard work. Youth must play an active role in creating and promoting peace, tolerance, co-existence, and a non-extremist environment.

Moreover, they must address all types of conflicts and issues in a constructive way that encourages reconciliation and conflict resolution. The youth can be the agent of change by changing their attitude and perspective towards the world. At the national level, the youth can be the community leaders of their respective communities and can initiate various projects to educate the people of rural areas. They can join various non-government organisations working for peace, tolerance, and harmony. In this way, youth ambassadors of all the communities may form links with one another, and this will enhance the acceptability and adaptability level among them. Youth need to educate the Western world about Islam and the Muslim world about the Western world.

In this way, rigidity, extremism, fanaticism, sectarianism, and all such factors, differences, and misconceptions hampering the way of peace will be removed. At the national level, youth must understand their socio-economic problems, and they must know how to tackle them peacefully. Likewise, on the international level, our youth must be trained to cope with evils like racism, terrorism, prejudice, and ethnocentrism; in this way, youth can be responsible for a balanced, prosperous, and peaceful society.
