Critical Thinking

a.      Are warmongers the greatest enemies of peace? What do you want to suggest to them?

Yes, warmongers are often the greatest enemies of peace because they promote conflict, violence, and division rather than understanding and cooperation. Their actions can cause suffering, destroy communities, and prevent societies from developing peacefully. To them, I would suggest reflecting on the human cost of war, realizing that lasting respect and progress come from dialogue, empathy, and compromise. Instead of seeking power through destruction, they should focus on building trust, resolving disputes through negotiation, and fostering education and cooperation. Peace benefits everyone, and choosing it over war leads to stronger, safer, and happier societies for all.

b.     The Nobel Prize-winning American novelist John Steinbeck (1902-1968) once said, “All war is a symptom of man's failure as a thinking animal.” Do you agree with the novelist? Why?

Yes, I agree with John Steinbeck. War shows that humans often fail to think carefully, act wisely, or solve problems peacefully. Instead of using reason, dialogue, and understanding, people sometimes choose violence to achieve their goals. This reflects failure in judgment, empathy, and foresight. Conflicts could be resolved through negotiation, compromise, and respect for others, but war happens when these are ignored. War brings destruction, suffering, and loss for everyone involved. If humans acted as thinking, compassionate beings, most wars could be avoided. Therefore, Steinbeck’s statement highlights the need for wisdom and careful thinking in human society.

c.      Does any war end all wars and bring lasting peace to the world? Discuss.

No war has ever truly ended all wars or brought lasting peace to the world. History shows that wars often lead to temporary solutions or power shifts, but underlying conflicts, misunderstandings, and competition for resources remain. Even after major wars, new tensions arise, sometimes in different regions or forms. True lasting peace requires more than victory on the battlefield; it needs justice, equality, dialogue, and cooperation among nations and people. Wars may stop immediate violence, but they rarely address the root causes of conflict. Therefore, lasting peace is achieved through diplomacy, understanding, and respect, not through repeated fighting.

d.     Why do you think countries go to war even though they have their own boundaries?

Countries often go to war even with established boundaries because conflicts are not only about land. Economic interests, natural resources, political power, and national security can create tensions between nations. Sometimes, historical disputes, cultural differences, or ethnic conflicts push countries into fighting. Leaders may also use war to gain popularity, distract from domestic problems, or expand their influence. Fear and mistrust between nations can escalate small disagreements into larger conflicts. Additionally, alliances and obligations to other countries may drag nations into wars that seem unrelated to their borders. While boundaries define territory, they cannot prevent disputes over trade, ideology, or strategic advantage.

Unfortunately, instead of solving issues through diplomacy, negotiation, or cooperation, some nations choose war, which brings temporary control but long-term suffering. Therefore, wars happen because human interests, ambitions, and misunderstandings often outweigh respect for borders.
