Stylistically the use of language can be formal and informal based on the selection of words putting them in distinct ways.
Formal language
Formal language is less personal than professional and academic communication is formal that uses impersonal voice avoiding slang, contractions, precise words, and highly sensitive rules of grammar and sentence structures.
Informal language
Informal language is more spontaneous and unintentional has slang, and contractions, and is less rigid about grammar and style issues. Informal language is controversial, personal in tone and often used with friends and family members. Writing a letter to a friend can use informal language whereas a speech delivered in a program by a governmental officer can be more formal.
Characteristics of Formal Language
The following features characterize formal language: (page 65)
• Absence of first-person pronouns such as ‘I’ or ‘We’.
• No contractions and no colloquial or slang language and clichés
• Precise selection of words
• Longer, more complex sentences
• Strict adherence to rules of grammar
• Greater use of passive voice
