Not only does our society and culture ( ) influence the way we speak the language but also we influence our society and culture in using language while socializing. We have our shared values internalized over years in using language that make us introduce ourselves to a stranger before starting a conversation. We follow certain culturally accepted norms on how we start and end our conversation or how we change topics while communicating.
Generally, a conversation begins with greetings, and then moves to contemporary topics like weather or current affairs and then to a subject-specific topic. We seek permission to change a topic, apologize for the interruption and thank our listeners or others at the end of conversations. People speaking the same language may have different cultural traits that depend on the region they live in or their personal experiences. We acquire knowledge from our culture directly or indirectly, explicitly or implicitly. People with different dialects and accents use different versions of the language in terms of distinct words, grammar, and pronunciation.
Dialects and Accents
They can vary by region, class and ethnicity as the Nepali Language spoken in Kathmandu differ in terms of dialect and accent spoken in other parts of Nepal and Darjeeling. The words such as ‘sorry’, ‘pardon’, and ‘excuse me’ can have similar or different meanings in different English-speaking cultures. Gender-specific differences can also be apparent as men speak directly and clearly while women communicate emotionally and indirectly. Globalization and outsourcing have made code-switching more common these days. Cultural bias is discriminating against people negatively based on race, country of origin, language, gender, age, skills, sexual orientation etc. ( use of ‘He’ or ‘Madhesi’ for Terai people, disabled in place of handicapped)
