Objects and Subject Complement
Objects and complements are important parts of a sentence that complete thought expressed by subject and simple predicate. An object is a noun or pronoun acted upon by another part of speech like a verb or preposition. An object can be of two types: direct and indirect objects
Direct Object
A direct object (https://youtu.be/QLLQdSc3dEo ) receives the action of the verb and helps complete the thought or sentence. It also answers what or whom questions are raised by subject and verb. Only action verbs can take direct objects and are changed into passive voice such as:
a. The Manager promoted the secretary. (Whom?)
b. The receptionist called the guardsman. (Whom?)
An indirect object:
The indirect object receives the action that the verb takes on the direct object. It always is located between a verb and a direct object but cannot be present in a sentence without a direct object such as:
a. She gave him a cell phone. ( a cell phone was given to him)
b. He sends her emails every day. (Emails are sent to her every day.)
Subject Complement
Subject Complement (https://youtu.be/YosEsGCRbeo ) is a noun or pronoun that renames the subject in the sentence. It can be an adjective that modifies the subject. In both cases, the subject complement follows a linking verb in a sentence. Linking verbs can be ‘be verbs, have verbs, seem that do not show activities such as:
Prem and Laxman are good friends.
In the above example, ‘Friends’ is a noun that renames ‘Prem and Laxman’ that is the subject complement ‘good friends’, ‘good’ is an adjective modifying ‘friends’. Similarly, in the sentence, ‘The dog was lazy’, here, ‘lazy’ is an adjective that describes ‘dog’.
