Unit Five: Brochures

A brochure  is a small printed single piece of paper that is a tool of advertisement for a company. It introduces a company, informing about its products or services to a target audience. It is designed professionally with an attractive layout and colorful pictures. It is written in simple language that provides the most important information about a company.

Uses of Brochures

They help in introducing our company by explaining the purposes of the firm, goods, and services. A brochure reveals the basic facts about the company, such as its mission, services, historical background, leadership and contact details. They are very effective tools to announce a specific program or event, to inform and educate people about any event. Another use of brochures is to provide answers to all frequently asked questions (FAQs) regarding the product or business. A brochure also helps to instruct people on certain procedures or steps. Highly technical works and health topics require such instructions.

Brochure Format

Layout: There is a wide variety of brochures regarding their shape and size because of the topics they cover. Moreover, we find some common basic elements in them. Most organisations undoubtedly use a tri-fold standard format to make brochures.

Front cover (1): This is the first thing a reader sees and grabs a brochure, so it must be an attention grabber with a teaser, the name of the business organisation, and a tagline emphasising key benefits. It consists colour image with a contact number, address, email or website.

Back cover (2): This part is left almost blank because people are less likely to read this panel. It may include contact addresses, websites, emails, etc.

Inside front panel (3): This is the most important panel of the brochure that concisely tries to convince the customers to choose your organisation for a specific product or service.

Inside three-panel spread (4): This is what the reader will see when he or she opens the brochure. It starts with a brief one or two-sentence description of what your company does.

Brochure Design

Brochure designing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snBomcevolg&t=40s ) is very important in making brochures because the messages written in the brochure are meant for promotional purposes, and the design of brochures makes them very attractive. Brochures are meant for 10-minute reading, so they must be well-organised and visually appealing. The following things are to be considered for the design of the brochure:

Typography: We must use standard typefaces (fonts) with proper headings and sub-headings, along with type and sizes.

Logos and symbols: We make sure that the logo or other symbols are of high quality, with proper resolution images that do not distort the picture.

Spacing: We must leave proper space around columns and margins rather they do not contain more text.

Colours: Colours help to give structure to the content, to highlight certain things or to enhance meaning and convey a certain mood. Do not use too much colour in it.

Illustrations: Drawings, diagrams, and images help to summarise a large amount of content, but be highly selective about the best one for it.

Technology: Brochures are designed manually, but computers are used to design them these days, making them faster and more efficient.
