a. How does the author persuade readers in this essay? What is he trying to communicate to the readers?
Freewriting is a technique of writing that improvises our ideas in writing. According to the writer, we have to practice freewriting at least three times a week for ten minutes each. This is the main theme of the essay, as the writer has shown us an example of freewriting. This example reveals the supporting ideas of the writer, which proves that our writing should satisfy the readers. The example he has shown us is not well-organized writing. However, it can be an example for us to improve our writing practice. He states why we cannot be good writers. He says that we have a rooted habit of editing our writing work, so we find it very difficult to write in a second language, i.e., English. The writer persuades readers by stating that freewriting can be handled without following any rules of grammar. We follow no rules and patterns, but write on a sheet of paper whatever we have in our mind. If we think of making mistakes and errors in writing, we will be stuck on the way to writing, and we cannot complete our writing task. Therefore, the writer is trying to communicate feedback, comments, evaluation, and editing work of writing to the readers, which are the things to be avoided in writing.
b. Elbow said, Freewriting is an exercise in bringing together the process of producing words and putting them down on the page.” Do you agree with his statement? Why? Why not?
Freewriting is an exercise in bringing together the process of producing words and putting them down on the page. We can continue our freewriting without stopping for discussion and comments. It can have connected ideas or not, but we do not stop in the middle of writing. We do not worry about the use of appropriate words in the right place, but we write what we have in our mind because freewriting does not concern the mechanics of writing, such as spelling, punctuation, and grammar rules, etc.
Yes, I agree with this statement because we practice it regularly, which improves our inbuilt habit of correcting writing. Therefore, regular practice of freewriting enhances our writing skills.
c. How did you learn to write? What was particularly difficult in writing? What inspired you to write? What are some of the challenges that you still face while writing?
Based on my personal experience, writing skill was the most difficult skill for my part of the study because I was really poor in it. When I was in secondary school, I could not dare to write a single paragraph on a certain topic. Even I was unable to write a single sentence correctly. I was really poor in every aspect of writing skills, such as vocabulary, structure, and sentence formation. The most challenging part of my writing skills was vocabulary because I had nothing in my mind when I sat down to write, which might be the interference of my mother tongue or native language. But I found some of my classmates with good writing skills. They always scored good marks in English, and their writings were also considered good during class hours.
During that time, I had a wish to write like them. Therefore, I got help from my close classmate, who helped me to improve my writing. I also asked my English teacher how to bring a change in my writing skills. He suggested learning more difficult words from every lesson we read. I strictly followed his suggestions and practised regularly every evening on any topic that came to my mind. Nowadays, at least I can write what I have in my mind, but still, I get problems in connecting my ideas properly while writing.
