Gaijatra
Gaijatra is a unique festival celebrated in Nepal during the month of Shrawan or Bhadra (August-September). It is a festival of cows and holds significant historical and cultural importance in the country. Primarily observed by the Newari community in the Kathmandu Valley, Gaijatra is celebrated the day after Janai Purnima to honor the memory of deceased loved ones. This festival is believed to console grieving families and bring happiness to their lives.
The origins of Gaijatra trace back to the 17th century when King Pratap Malla lost his son. To console his queen, the festival was initiated. During Gaijatra, families who have lost a member in the past year participate in a procession with a cow. In Nepal, the cow is considered a sacred animal, and it is believed to help the deceased’s soul reach heaven. The procession moves through the streets, and participants distribute food and sweets to the people.
Gaijatra promotes unity and brotherhood among the people, strengthening the bonds of family and community. The festival is marked by colorful costumes, music, and dance, adding vibrancy and enjoyment to the event. In my opinion, Gaijatra is a unique festival that celebrates life and helps people remember their loved ones who have passed away.
In conclusion, Gaijatra is an integral part of Nepal's rich culture and traditions. Celebrating Gaijatra provides an opportunity to celebrate life and strengthen the bonds of family and community.
