Class 12 English Unit 1: Critical Thinking Langauge Development Section

Critical Thinking

a.      Have you made your precept after you read this lesson? What is it? Share it with your friends.

Yes, I have made my precept after reading this lesson. I mostly changed my ideas and concepts of handicapped and disabled people. However, I used to think of them as very inferior and feeble, who have no ability and capacity to do something like other normal people. But, this lesson has widened my sense of handicapped people and now I start to respect them and their dignity as well. If we provide them with any space in our thoughts with ample opportunity, they can prove it with their devotion to that work to achieve grand success. Therefore, we should judge people by their deeds, but not by their color which I learned from this lesson. Similarly, our kindness may open the golden door for the future life of handicapped and disabled people. Additionally, I have seen and read many people in the world who are disabled and handicapped, yet, got names and fame such as Jhamak Ghimire, a Nepali poet, Stephen Hawkins, an English theoretical physicist, Helen Keller, an American author, Louis Braille, a blind who invented Braille script for blind people.

Hence, we should respect the people who face deformities with our kindness so that they can feel like a member of the same society.

b.     According to Josh Lanyon, “If there was one life skill everyone on the planet needed, it was the ability to think with critical objectivity.” Justify this statement with your logic.

According to Josh Lanyon, ‘If there was one life skill everyone on the planet needed, it was the ability to think with critical objectivity. This statement shows the importance of critical thinking that analyses, investigates, evaluates, and inquires about the information we get in our study. Similarly, we study academic texts, journals, and scholarly articles, so we need to think critically because these articles are written a specific manner with the author’s purpose and viewpoint. Therefore, our critical thinking helps to measure and analysis of facts, assumptions, and presumptions to come up with a rational conclusion. Additionally, critical thinking helps to get the writer’s intent in the text we study. It also highlights the main issues presented in the writings. We can express our criticism of any work if we are not satisfied.

However, the writer may have relevant or irrelevant evidence to support his writings, but our critical thinking helps to identify these things. So, they may be based on objective or subjective viewpoints. Hence, with the help of critical thinking, we identify them. For example, we can separate scientific journals from business articles because of the jargon used in scientific journals.
