Reflection of the Text
Social media is a way of sending and receiving messages from any part of the world. It also helps to communicate and be updated with the people we follow. Nowadays, it has become an inseparable part of our lives. We can watch videos, listen to music, and update our images through social media.
Moreover, we can scroll on Twitter or Facebook to get the latest news from around the world. However, the writer raises the question about the ruling of social media over human life. Therefore, the writer exposes the incident in Indonesia that is about the misuse of social media. Prita Mulyasari in August 2008 was an example of a victim of using social media. She just wrote her disappointment with the hospital services in Jakarta. But, her message got viral on social media. She wanted to make her friends aware of such services.
The management of the hospital blamed her for spreading bad news and claimed the loss of Rp. 161 million. She was charged with the amount and kept in jail for 8 months. She was convicted by the court for violating the law about using ICT. Most of the Indonesian people were ready to help Prita as they did not care what she did against the hospital. They ran a campaign in favour of saving her by collecting money. Many volunteers, social workers, activists, students, and even artists came together to help her.
They were collecting many coins from people on the street, in offices, and even in an entertainment center. In December 2009, the campaign was concluded, and they succeeded in collecting the coins to help Prita, about Rp. 825 million. The writer tries to make us believe that social media has the strength to influence and control human life. Prita’s case clearly explains to us that social media was able to make people’s lives get worse or get better.
It certainly does not mean that we need to stay away or become anti-social media. People are stronger than social media because we can easily think before we act and think before we speak.
