A.   Punctuate the following paragraph. (Answers only)

Nitin is one of the most laid-back students I know. He is tall and slim with black hair, and he always wears a shirt and black jeans. His jeans have holes in them, and his best baseball boots are scruffy, too. He usually sits at the back of the class, and he often seems to be asleep. However, when the exam results are given out, he always gets an 'A'. I don't think he's as lazy as he appears to be.

a.      what is an environment?

b.     What is its importance?

c.      What are the causes of environmental degradation?

d.     How can we protect the environment?

The environment encompasses all living and non-living things that exist on Earth, including air, water, soil, plants, animals, and microorganisms. It forms a complex web of interactions and dependencies among these components, creating ecosystems that support life. The environment provides essential resources such as oxygen, water, food, and raw materials, which are vital for the survival and well-being of all species. It also offers ecosystem services like pollination, climate regulation, and waste decomposition, which maintain ecological balance and support human life.

The importance of the environment cannot be overstated. It is the foundation upon which human societies and economies are built. A healthy environment is crucial for sustaining biodiversity, ensuring clean air and water, and providing fertile soil for agriculture. It also plays a significant role in regulating the climate and weather patterns, which are essential for stable living conditions. Environmental degradation, however, poses a severe threat to these benefits. Major causes of environmental degradation include deforestation, pollution, industrial activities, overexploitation of natural resources, and climate change. These activities lead to habitat destruction, loss of biodiversity, air and water pollution, soil erosion, and global warming.

To protect the environment, concerted efforts are needed at both individual and collective levels. Sustainable practices, such as reducing waste, recycling, conserving water and energy, and using eco-friendly products, can significantly reduce the environmental footprint. Governments and organizations must implement and enforce policies aimed at conserving natural resources, reducing emissions, and protecting natural habitats. Additionally, raising awareness and educating communities about the importance of environmental stewardship can foster a culture of responsibility and care for the planet. By adopting sustainable practices and supporting environmental conservation initiatives, we can ensure a healthier environment for future generations.
