Critical Thinking
a. What can be the qualities of a great leader? Can a great leader remain in power for long in a country? Discuss.
A great leader should have vision, honesty, courage, fairness, and the ability to inspire people. They work for the good of the country, keep promises, and make clear decisions. Good communication and the strength to face problems are also important. In Nepal, leaders like B.P. Koirala showed vision and worked for democracy and social justice, which made people respect them. However, staying in power for long depends on keeping trust and delivering results. In some cases, leaders like Saddam Hussein of Iraq, who ruled for about 24 years (1979–2003), and Muammar Gaddafi of Libya, who ruled for about 42 years (1969–2011), remained in power for decades through strict control and fear rather than public trust, but their rule ended violently.
Nepal’s politics is unstable, with frequent government changes and party disputes, so even capable leaders do not remain in power for long. For example, Madan Bhandari was popular but could not lead for long due to his sudden death.
b. The 16th president of the USA, Abraham Lincoln, said democracy is government of the people, for the people, and by the people. Do you think it is perfectly applicable in the present context of Nepal? Explain.
Abraham Lincoln served as the President of the United States from March 1861 to April 1865, a period of approximately 4 years. Abraham Lincoln’s concept of democracy entails that the government should be chosen by the people, work for the people, and represent the people’s will. In Nepal, we have a democratic system where leaders are elected by citizens. However, in practice, this principle is not fully applied. Corruption, political instability, and party disputes often stop the government from truly serving the people.
Many leaders focus more on personal or party interests than on public welfare. While Nepal has the structure of democracy, it still needs improvement to match Lincoln’s vision, where citizens’ needs and voices are always the top priority.
